The Island Institute has helped to sustain Maine’s year-round island
and coastal communities, conserve island and marine biodiversity,
balance cultural and natural environments, and encourage discussion of
the responsible use of finite resources. This project will
work with Maine’s coastal communities to carry out the data collection
tasks. The collection includes surveying officials in each coastal town
and using GIS technology to transfer local knowledge to spatial and
attribute data, so that organizations locally and regionally can use
the information to protect Maine's working waterfront.
