Disasters Community on GeoPlatform

Disasters.Geoplatform.Gov is a website for integrating and organizing geospatial information and tools for the community of partners involved in the preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation of disasters. The Geospatial Data Act of 2018 (GDA) establishes the need for such coordination and integration to ensure effective disaster response and resilience including the development and implementation of a robust Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) to support the efficient use and sharing of geospatial information and applications between community partners.

The Disasters.Geoplatform.Gov site helps achieve these goals by providing a unified environment for federal, state, local, tribal, and other community partners to more easily publish, share, and access authoritative geospatial data and applications related to the preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation of disasters.

This website provides information on disaster events, data, documentation and resources, applications and tools, community partners, and more.

What Information and data are available on Disasters.GeoPlatform.gov ?

The site’s content includes curated geospatial data, applications, medatadata, and other documentation relevant to disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation and is indexed and posted on a regular basis by community members.

The website is organized into pages for Data, Applications, Resources, and the like. The Data page provides key content for both raw and or derived data that describe the current or future state of the world such as elevation, water bodies, building outlines, real-time weather, impact estimates, etc.

The Applications page includes key consequence models, decision support tools, and other data processing and analytical tools used to estimate impacts and help answer specific questions related to operational disaster response and emergency management.

The Resources page include white papers, briefings, user guides, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and other supporting documentation associated with the data and applications.

A Search tool is available on each page to assist in the discovery of content. To facilitate efficient and robust search, discovery, linking, and management of content, data is being cataloged and organized within a larger disasters ontology based on the Emergency Support Function (ESFLG) Modeling and Data Working Group’s Model and Data Inventory (MoDI). This ontology, along with a unified index of geospatial disasters data and tools from across the partner community, is currently being developed to power the Search tool to enable users to more easily locate and access relevant content by disaster event name, type, date, location, and more.
