ANSI publishes North American Profile of ISO Metadata Standard

The FGDC is pleased to announce the publication of the North American Profile of ISO 19115:2003 – Geographic Information – Metadata, (NAP-Metadata) as an American National Standard (ANS).

InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards Technical Committee L1 (hereafter called INCITS L1), Geographic information systems, and the Canadian General Standards Board Committee on Geomatics (CGSB-CoG) developed the North American Profile through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Standards Council of Canada (SCC).  The profile is a culmination of over three years work by metadata standards experts from the US and Canada.  The FGDC Metadata Working Group made many contributions at various stages of development of the NAP.  The FGDC appreciates the contributions from the US metadata community in this long and fruitful effort.

The NAP-Metadata was processed by both the U.S. based INCITS Secretariat and the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) before approval and simultaneous publication as an American National Standard and a Canadian National Standard.

The NAP-Metadata may be purchased for $30 (US) through the ANSI Standards Store. The North American Profile is copyrighted: users should consult the brochure Copyright, Standards, and the Internet and the End User License Agreement (EULA) for constraints on usage.

About CGSB-CoG

The CGSB is a federal government organization accredited by the SCC that offers client-centered comprehensive standards development and conformity assessment services in support of the economic, regulatory, procurement, health, safety, and environmental interests of Canadian stakeholders — government, industry, and consumers. The CGSB-CoG is the technical committee responsible for the development and maintenance of unique National Standards in the area of geomatics.

About INCITS L1

ANSI has accredited the procedures of INCITS to develop voluntary consensus standards for Information and Communications Technologies (ICT). INCITS comprises many technical committees, including INCITS L1, which develop standards in specific topic areas of ICT.

The U.S. participates in ANSI and ISO standardization activities for geographic information through INCITS L1. Implementation of common standards promotes data sharing at the local, state, national, and international levels.

OMB Circular A-119 directs Federal agencies to participate in voluntary consensus standards bodies such as INCITS L1. To that end, the FGDC and member agencies have joined INCITS L1 as members.

In addition, the private sector and professional associations are represented on INCITS L1.
