Greetings Community Stewards,
We are taking two key steps towards better facilitating featuring your content on the Geospatial One-Stop portal. The first is that in addition to our System Administrator, Jacque Fahsholts, we have also added a new staff member, Dan Sandhaus, who will work with you to help built and maintain your data community. Secondly, we are organizing a two-day Community Steward training workshop at the Federal Center in Denver Colorado, on Wednesday and Thursday, April 25-26, 2007. This workshop provides us an opportunity to get away from our usual job responsibilities and spend some focused time working at featuring new data sets, services and applications found across government.
This is an important event for us to be able to refresh and improve our featured content on the portal and to start taking advantage of new capabilities provided by the Websphere content management tools. Our goal is for each community to move beyond the ‘Channel Tool’ to take advantage of the Websphere tools and actually post a ‘Map Gallery’, incorporate full website pages, and even discuss future custom portlets. For an example of some new ways to build a community take a look at the new ‘Earth Information Exchange Community’ now featured on the geodata.gov home page. This workshop will be beneficial to both new content providers and to existing Community Stewards to use the tools and capabilities, and share ideas on how best to move forward.
Some of the workshop content will include:
· A look at some of the new and upcoming enhancements to the portal
· Creating a Community
· Customizing the Community to create dynamic and interesting content that attracts attention
· Taking advantage of existing websites to feature within the Community
· Creating a Map gallery and incorporating ‘Add to Map’ functions
· Building and featuring a custom view of multiple map services using the map viewer
· Publishing a WMS, WFS, WCS, etc.
· Working with the Channel Editor tool
Let us know if there are specific capabilities or areas of interest you would feel would be most beneficial. We plan on using a good deal of the workshop time to work on and improve your actual community. Jacque Fahsholtz, and Dan Sandhaus, will be there to work with you during the course and will continue to work with you thereafter to help enhance our Communities. So sketch out your ideas, bring map service URLs (i.e. the ‘get map’ request URL) and outline the data and systems you want to highlight and let’s build the next generation of your data community!
Please RSVP by Thursday, March 30, 2007 to dsandhaus@usgs.gov or myself if you are planning to attend.
More information on the training location, nearby lodging suggestions, and other logistics will follow.
Thank you,
Rob
