Standards Reference Model

The FGDC Standards Reference Model (1996) provided a means to classify standards.  Taxonomy was derived from the principles of information engineering, which was a design and standards development technique that was developed by IBM in the late 1970's and early 1980's. As the information engineering technique dates back many years, newer approaches should be reviewed for possible updates to the FGDC Standards Reference Model.

The FGDC Standards Reference Model will be retained as an informational document.  It lists expectations for standards, which are still valid.  It also outlines the standards development process, which is now covered by FGDC standards directives.
